Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick to help Barcelona defeat Real Betis 4-1 in the La Liga on Sunday. The 31-year-old forward received a standing ovation by the opposition fans at the Benito Villamarín Stadium. The victory helped Barcelona go 10 points clear at the top of La Liga points table.


Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick against Real Betis in La Liga as FC Barcelona extended their lead at the top of the table to 10 points with a 4-1 win at the Benito Vilmarin Stadium.

With Atletico Madrid dropping points in a 2-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao, league leaders Barcelona had the opportunity to virtually seal the title by extending their lead to 10 points. As always, up stepped Messi with a phenomenal performance forcing the Real Betis fans into giving him a standing ovation.

In the 18th minute, Messi’s pass to Arthur forced a Betis player in giving away a free kick at the edge of the penalty box. Messi stepped up to take the free kick & curled it in the top left corner giving no chance to the Betis keeper to save the effort.

At the stroke of half-time, Messi played a one-two with Suarez before hitting the back of the net to double Barcelona’s lead before going into the break.

In the 63rd minute, Luis Suarez dribbled past three Betis defenders & ensured that he finished the chance to give the away side a 3-goal cushion.

In the 82nd minute, Betis pulled one goal back as Diego Lainez did the hard work & set-up Loren Moron to finish the opportunity & the Spaniard did just that as he finished past Marc Andre Ter Stegen.

Three minutes later, Messi exchanged a one-two & then chipped the keeper from the edge of the 18-yard box with the ball hitting the crossbar & then ending up in the back of the net.

Two minutes later, Messi hit the post after getting through on goal thus failing to get his fourth goal of the night.

Messi ran the show in Seville from start to end, thus earning a much-deserved standing ovation from the Betis fans.
